Why Maps Matter in GIScience

چکیده

or Real An important characteristic of maps is the fact that they represent selections from reality in an abstract way. Especially for presentation purposes, maps that look ‘empty’ might even work better than maps with an overloaded view. In an exploratory mode, an overloaded map could be very representative for the topic being studied, and via interactive selection and filtering techniques the user can ‘drill-down’ to the information thought relevant (Shneiderman, 1998). The ‘selection/abstraction’ characteristic is not only challenged by exploration, but also by new viewing environments such as virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) (Dykes et al., 1999a; Unwin and Fisher, 2001; Sherman and Craig, 2002). These allow a different view on reality and, in addition, one can become completely absorbed in this ‘reality’. VR and AR require realism in the imagery used, which can be obtained via state of the art data collection techniques, such as laser scanning 86 The Cartographic Journal

CENTENN IAL FORUM GIScience, Geography, Form, and Process

T he map has evolved over the past few centuries as humanity’s primary method for storing and communicating knowledge of the Earth’s surface. Topographic maps portray the general form of the surface and its primary physical and cultural features; thematic maps show the variation of more specialized properties such as soil type or population density; and bathymetric maps and hydrographic charts ...

Towards Geographic Information Observatories

In this work we outline the vision of geographic information observatories, explain how and why GIScience would benefit from broadening its range to studies of the information universe (without necessarily relating it back to the physical universe), how our technology stack puts the GIScience community in a unique position to develop such observatories, and illustrate how these observatories wo...

Visual Task Solution Strategies in Public Transport Maps

Public transport maps are used as visual aid for travellers to support the route finding task from a start to a destination. Although those maps are designed in a user-friendly manner by applying effective layouts, color codings, as well as intuitive symbolic representations it is unclear which perceptual, readability, and understandability problems the human user has when looking at those maps...

Identifying Maps on the World Wide Web

This paper presents an automatic approach to mining collections of maps from the Web. Our method harvests images from the Web and then classifies them as maps or non-maps by comparing them to previously classified map and non-map images using methods from Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). Our approach outperforms the accuracy of the previous approach by 20% in F1-measure. Further, our metho...

Outline of a Formal Theory of Processes and Events, and Why GIScience Needs One

It has often been noted that traditional GIScience, with its focus on data-modelling functions such as the input, storage, retrieval, organisation, manipulation, and presentation of data, cannot readily accommodate the process-modelling functions such as explanation, prediction, and simulation which it is increasingly acknowledged should form an essential element of the GI scientist’s toolkit. ...
